Renewing a Registration

Customers may renew their vehicle for a period of one or two years and may renew up to three months in advance of the registration expiration. Vehicle registrations expire at midnight on the first owner’s birth date unless the owner is a business or the vehicle is a heavy truck. Heavy truck registrations expire June 30 or December 31 depending on the registration use.

To renew a registration with RushMyDMV, the customer must provide personal identifying information of the owner of the vehicle to log in and complete the transaction. If the department is unable to verify valid insurance on the vehicle, no registration will be issued.

Renew via Mobile App

Customers may renew vehicles via the mobile app, RushMyDMV, for a period of one year or two years with a fee. The app offers:

Payment options: Major Credit cards and PayPal. RushMyDMV App is available on all mobile devices and allows customers to securely renew a registration on an eligible vehicle.

To renew a registration via mobile app, the customer must provide the license plate or vehicle identification number (VIN) of the vehicle they seek to register. If the department is unable to electronically verify valid insurance on the vehicle, no registration will be issued on the mobile app.

Registration Renewal Fees

The fees are broken down and vary state to state. Certain States have a base Registration/Renewal Fees and or other States depend on the vehicle weight, date of birth and assess based on the vehicle use and class code.

Please note that the fees that you will see associated with your vehicle on this website may be an estimate based upon the information you have provided to us (car type, vehicle location, etc.) and the final amount charged to your card may vary slightly when we process your transaction with the state.

Additional Fees

A delinquent registration fee is imposed on any customer who fails to renew registrations of motor vehicles and mobile homes beginning on the eleventh calendar day of the month succeeding the month in which the renewal registrations were due. State Statutes, specifically requires the delinquent fee to be imposed on any applicant who fails to renew a registration before the end of the month in which renewal registration is due.

Please note: registrations are only valid until midnight on the registrant’s birthday.

What are the eligibility requirements for renewing my registration online through this site? The vehicle must be currently registered with the State.

All the personal and vehicular information on your registration renewal is correct. You have valid auto insurance that is on file with the State.

Each transaction varies by state and Need:

The State DMV requires you to surrender your license plate by mail or in person at a State’s Office in the following circumstances:

If you sell the vehicle without transferring the license plate to your new vehicle. If you move to a new state and register the vehicle in that state. If you cancel the insurance on your vehicle. When insurance is canceled and motor vehicle records indicate the vehicle is still registered in your name with a valid license plate, the Bureau of Financial Responsibility, Division of Driver Licenses requires that the license plate be canceled to avoid a driver license suspension.

Failure to surrender your license plate when you sell your vehicle and are not transferring the plate to a replacement vehicle within 30 days will also result in a driver license suspension. When you surrender your plate, a new vehicle registration will be printed indicating the license plate is canceled. Retain the “Surrendered Registration” receipt. This may be used to exempt registration fee when a replacement vehicle is registered.

To surrender your license plate by mail, send the license plate and a written request that the license plate be canceled and recycled. Please mail the license plate and request to:

A title printed and provided to the customer in an expedited manner is referred to as a fast title and printed the same day.

The department encourages all owners to maintain their titles electronically. However, if all liens on your vehicle have been satisfied, an electronic title can be transferred to a paper format in one of three ways; online, via mail, or in person.

If your title is currently in paper form, you will need to bring your paper title with you when trading your vehicle at a dealership.

If your title is currently in paper form and you are selling your vehicle, rather than trading it at a dealership, you will need your paper title in order to transfer ownership to the purchaser. The department recommends conducting the transfer in one of our motor vehicle service centers to ensure your name is removed from the vehicle ownership record.

The fee to replace a lost decal is $33.60. The fee to replace a lost tag and decal is $36.40. There is no cost to replace a stolen tag and decal. The customer must provide the vehicle registration or the number of the lost or stolen tag.

How do I get a Disabled Person Parking Permit? Who is eligible?

You must submit application form HSMV 83039, signed by a certifying medical authority within the last 12 months, to your local motor vehicle service center with appropriate payment for temporary permits only. In addition to the completed form, be sure to bring a copy of your Florida driver license or ID card.

Disability types include:

Inability to walk without the use of or assistance from a brace, cane, crutch, prosthetic device, or other assistive device, or without assistance of another person. If the assistive device significantly restores the person’s ability to walk to the extent that the person can walk without severe limitation, the person is not eligible for the exemption parking permit. The need to permanently use a wheelchair.

Restriction by lung disease to the extent that the person’s forced (respiratory) expiratory volume for 1 second, when measured by spirometry, is less than one liter or the person’s arterial oxygen is less than 60 mm/hg on room air at rest. Use of portable oxygen.

Restriction by cardiac condition to the extent that the person’s functional limitations are classified in severity as Class III or Class IV according to standards set by the American Heart Association.

Severe limitation in a person’s ability to walk due to an arthritic, neurological, or orthopedic condition.

Legally blind (certifiable only by an optometrist). Persons issued a permanent disabled person parking permit will receive a renewal notice before their next expiration date.

How much does a disabled person parking permit or wheelchair license plate cost?

Temporary disabled person parking permits require a $15 fee. If the need for the temporary disabled person parking permit exceeds six months, an additional temporary permit may be issued. If the additional permit is applied for within 12 months from the issuance of the first permit, no additional fee is required.

Persons with long-term mobility impairments, or who are certified as legally blind, may request a wheelchair license plate be issued for a motor vehicle registered in their name, in lieu of receiving a permanent disabled persons parking permit. The fee for a wheelchair license plate is $28 in addition to other applicable registration fees.

If your title is currently in paper form and has been lost, stolen or damaged, a duplicate paper title can be obtained from the department. To obtain a duplicate paper title an owner must mail the following:

Proof of Identity (copy of driver license, ID card, etc.). Proof of lien satisfaction, if applicable. Pay sales tax and title and registration fees, if applicable.

A vehicle must have a valid registration to operate on the roads, and vehicle with out-of-state registrations are required by law to be registered within 10 days of the owner either becoming employed, placing children in public school, or establishing residency. A complete registration consists of the following:

A metal plate (number on plate must match the number provided on the registration and decal)

A registration certificate in the possession of the operator of the motor vehicle or carried in the vehicle at all times by law.

A registration decal is a sticker that is provided on the registration certificate. The validation decal should be affixed in the square provided on the license plate.

This complete set is evidence of having paid the registration taxes and fees on a motor vehicle.

My vehicle plates were lost, stolen or destroyed. What can I do? You must surrender the vehicle registration to the DMV.

If two vehicle plates are lost, stolen or destroyed (or one plate if the vehicle was issued only one plate, e.g. motorcycles), you need to notify the police, and ask the police to complete a police report. Please provide RushMyDMV a police report to surrender the vehicle registration.

If you cannot get a police report, write a statement that includes your plate number and explains why you cannot surrender your plates.

HOV Use of the HOV decal issued by the State’s Department Of Motor Vehicle (DMV) or Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) will allow Inherently Low Emission Vehicles (ILEV) and Hybrid vehicles certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to drive in a High Occupancy Vehicle lane at any time regardless of its occupancy.

A lien is when a lien holder has a secured interest in a vehicle, mobile home or vessel in the form of a debt due to the lien holder and the lien holder’s information is placed on either a paper or electronic certificate of title in addition to the owner’s information.

Electronic Liens

On an electronic title, lien notifications and satisfactions are transmitted electronically between the Department and the lien holder. When an electronic lien is satisfied, the title will then remain electronic until a request for paper title is received.

The Department has implemented an Electronic Lien and Titling system (ELT) designed to assist lien holders as well as vehicle owners. The ELT system reduces the handling, storage and mailing costs associated with paper titles by replacing them with electronic titles. Lien holders who join the program and customers that maintain an electronic title may enjoy the following benefits:

  • Faster notification of lien satisfactions;
  • Reduction in storage of title documents;
  • Access to expedited title printing;

It is legal to give a car to a family member or anyone else, however, a bill of sale or an affidavit should be completed by both parties to verify this information for the Department of Revenue.

If the vehicle is purchased by joint ownership, why do both parties have to be present? Can I sign for my spouse?

When a first-time joint ownership is applied for, whether joint ownership is connected by “and” or “or”, the signatures of each intended owner are required on the application for title.

If a title includes the name of both spouses, the surviving spouse may choose to request a free title replacement removing the name of the deceased spouse. To obtain a replacement title for Surviving Spouse Transfer of Certificate of Title for a Motor Vehicle and submit to a motor vehicle service center along with a certified copy of the death certificate and proof of identity (driver license/ID card/valid passport). A marriage certificate will also be required unless the name of the surviving spouse is shown on the death certificate.
